Sims – Field Notes

Sims of the Doomtree collective is back with his third album, it’s a little short at 7 tracks but I’m not complaining. The Doomtree rappers have consistently put out great songs over the past 10 years. Sims first album Lights Out Paris is probably my favourite Doomtree album, it’s a little darker and angstier than a lot of their newer stuff. His seconds album Bad Time Zoo came it in 2011 and was one of the better hip hop albums from that year.

One of my biggest problems with Doomtree is their production, it’s not too bad but I feel a more organic sound like we heard on Lights Out Paris fits better. This new album has a lot of synth’s and beat’s that build up to a drop most noticeably on They Don’t Work For Us which sounds like a club track. I really like Sims raps, however a couple of songs on Bad Time Zoo and again on this new album, his hooks often sound a little frantic and conceived for amping up live shows. The final track This Is The Place with Astronautalis is an exception with a violin loop and Astronautalis more relaxed voice on the chorus.

On first listen this is not my favourite work from Sims but I am willing to give it some time to see if it grows on me. There is certainly enough lyrical content that it will take a few listens to take it in.
