Awol One – Collaborations Mixtape 1

Awol One of the legendary Shapeshifters crew has a new pay what you like mixtape available via bandcamp. Before I get int his music I have to mention that if you are on Instagram you should be following Awol’s Instagram because as well as rapping and producing he is also a great visual artist. Recently he has been creating figurines that are always interesting.

Awol One has a deep distinctive voice and a lazy delivery that is not likely to catch the attention of hip hop purists. I started listening to Awol One years ago when I first heard of Shapeshifters, I remember friends being annoyed by me repeat listening to Rules Of The Week from the Slanguage album with Daddy Kev. It was his first album with Factor, Only Death Can Kill You, that really caught my attention. Since that album he and Factor have collaborated on two more full length albums and Awol One has also appeared on a few of Factor’s albums.

On this collaboration mixtape the list of artists that Awol has collaborated with is seriously impressive. I have heard a few of these songs before on albums produced by Factor and or released on Fake Four. As this is a collaboration mix tape the various producers and features restrict if from having a lot of flow, Awol’s voice is the one constant which is distinct enough to tie it all together. On my first listen my favourite tracks are two I’d hear before Murder City with Noah 23 and Sole and Murder Scene with Dark Time Sunshine.

If you’re into hip hop and never heard of Awol One before there is probably another rapper he’s collaborated with that you know and like, so check it out!
