I got the new Chelsea Wolfe record in the mail recently. It’s her fourth overall, but the first I can listen to without falling asleep. It benefits from more focus on atmospherics. Chelsea Wolfe’s never been a particularly melodic songwriter and tends to bury her vocals under a mountain of reverb. On the new record, there’s more going on. Trading in sparse arrangements for a doomier feel has endeared herself to sensitive metal heads and post-rock nerds alike.
