Eve 6 scored their first record deal while they were still in high school. Their self-titled debut went to #1 on the modern rock charts on the back of hit single “Inside Out.” Their second album “Horrorscope” spawned the high school prom/graduation anthem “Here’s To The Night.” After their third record “It’s All In Your Head” the band went on hiatus.
Eight years later Eve 6 reformed and released their fourth record: “Speak In Code.” Picking up where they left off, it’s full of shiny (yet somewhat sleazy) pop-rock numbers about love, lust and infidelity. Singer/bassist Max Collins hasn’t lost a step when it comes to trying to rhyme words that don’t quite fit (to often hilarious effect i.e. “Possessive” and “Desperate” or “B.O.M.B.” with monogamy.) The first single, “Victoria”, recalls an unfaithful girlfriend with a healthy taste for the nightlife. “B.F.G.F” (Best Friend’s Girlfriend) laments a similar situation while album opener “Curtain” ironically bids adieu to the rock ‘n roll lifestyle. Perhaps it was written long before the band had reformed.
Of the four records, “Speak In Code” is the weakest of the bunch. It doesn’t have the reckless abandon of their debut, the hooks of “Horrorscope” or the crunchy edges of “It’s All In Your Head”. Not to say it’s a bad album, it just fails to stick out from the rest of their discography.
