This week’s Playlist Monday is a sadder story than most. At the beginning of this month, I returned to my hometown of London Ontario to say goodbye to a family member. My dog Gizmo, 16 years old, had clearly been suffering for a while. He was blind, deaf, had lost most of his teeth, had tumours, and arthritis. It was time for him to go. After that, I decided to pay tribute to him the best way I knew how: to play my favourite songs and drink in his honour. The following Bathory songs are all dedicated to saying a glorious goodbye to a brother and faithful companion. While Gizmo and I never embarked upon any viking conquests, he was still a loyal and faithful companion, and I’ll miss him dearly. Rest in peace, old friend.
- Great Hall Awaits a Fallen Brother
Now your journey has reached the end of its trail For today was a fine day to die We shall meet again in great hall in the sky And shall be until the end of time - Death and Resurrection of a Northern Son
All still, no more pain the wind whispering my name - Hammerheart
The vast gates to hall up high Shall stand open wide and welcome you with all its within - Valhalla
Laid in ship of Oak On final sail to fate - A Fine Day To Die
The elder among the men looked deep into The fire and spoke loud with pride Tomorrow is a fine day to die - Song To Hall Up High
Northern wind take my song up high To the Hall of glory in the sky So its gates shall greet me open wide When my time has come to die
