For a band hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, you may not immediately think of British Invasion-flavoured power pop, but that’s exactly what Superdrag delivers. “Head Trip In Every Key” is the band’s meaty, sophmore release recorded after their debut spawned their one and only radio hit, “Sucked Out”. It would also be their last for a major label that allotted the band a hefty recording budget of the like that the band knowingly would never receive again.
Standouts include melodic rockers “Sold You An Alibi”, “Do The Vampire” and “Shuck & Jive” that pick up where first album, “Regretfully Yours” left off. Also worth noting is the group’s nod to Teenage Fanclub in “Pine Away” while the bouncy “Hellbent” provides a much cleverer use of a Beatles reference within the lyrics than Noel Gallagher’s. For the fitting grand finale, the band utilizes Sitar in “The Art of Dying” that climaxes with a string orchestra.
Unfortunately, Elektra dropped the band after this release, without much promotional effort and giving little opportunity for a song off of it to hit the airwaves. Thankfully Head Trip has recently been issued on vinyl much like a lot of classic 90s gems these days giving it a much deserved second chance to be appreciated.
