Initially starting as a solo project for singer/guitarist Darius Byrne, The Smoking Bells have returned with their new EP “The Civil Service”. This time around Byrne has recruited Matt Barr and Andrew Eyles (better known as the rhythm section for defunct post-rockers Epigram) and Brian Ireland on keyboard.
The difference between The Smoking Bells’s 2012’s self-titled EP and “The Civil Service EP” is stark. Where the former relied on syncopated rhythms and lush soundscapes, the latter captures a live feel that was absent before. I found the whole thing to be reminiscent of 60’s psychedelic rock bands like Steppenwolf but with a bit more muscle behind it. Lead-off track “Outrun” is the standout of the bunch with huge guitars and driving energy.
I can’t shake the feeling that with just a scant four tracks on it, “The Civil Service EP” is just a small sampling of what The Smoking Bells have to offer as a four-piece. I look forward to hearing what comes next.
