Aptly titled after one of the band’s singles, “Made Of Stone” documents the Stone Roses’ reunion thru the lens of friend, fan and filmmaker Shane Meadows. While a history of the band’s formation is briefly touched on in the beginning thru vintage interview clips and pictures, the film is mostly a behind the scenes glance of the preparations for the reunion shows throughout 2012.
Band members, fans and friends occasionally chime in on memories of the past during the Roses’ prime, though very little narration is heard for a cohesive story. Meadows lets the music of the band and the sight of them happily reunited after decades apart tell the story. Highlights of the film are definitely from the live shows and the candid rehearsal footage featuring the band as a whole looking and sounding great despite a bit of wear in Ian Brown’s voice. Footage of excited fans trying to win free tickets to a warm up show captures the joy and meaning of the Roses to their fans, but unfortunately that segment runs a bit too long.
Despite not being perfect, this film should please hardcore fans who have yet to catch the Roses in action since their reunion or at all. After decades apart and a public feud between Ian Brown and John Squire, “Made Of Stone” is a nice little snapshot of a band reunion that many thought would never come.
