Sapient of the Oregon hip hop collective Sandpeople has a new release named Light Tiger, it is volume two in his Eaters series. Tusks, which was volume 1 was a beat tape, volume two does feature some rap and vocals but is mostly instrumental. This is a DIY album with all of music, vocals and artwork are put together by Sapient.
The production has a playful bouncy feel to it (with a dash of growling tiger samples). It reminds me a lot of Aussie hip hop duo Hermitude’s style. The instrumental tracks hold their own and have enough going on that it does not feel like they need vocals. On the tracks that do have vocals there are hints of the styles we heard on the 2013 release Slump, which was more of a pop concept album than a rap album but this has been integrated nicely.
