Open Mike Eagle has been at it for a while but is relatively fresh to my ears. I had heard his name before but it was not until I picked up Hellfyre Club’s Dorner Vs Tookie mixtape that I heard his music. His songs Qualifiers and Degrassi Picture Day are two of my favorites from that mixtape.
He labels his style as “art rap” which I guess is a fair description. His lyrics are full of playful and comedic one liners but offset by honest modesty. Blending comedy into rap often comes across as gimmicky and repeat listens can become tedious. Open Mike Eagle had managed to craft his style to be like a good stand up routine, even when you’ve heard the punchline before it’s the delivery that makes it enjoyable.
If I had one complaint about previous releases it would be a lack of consistency. From a couple of listens Dark Comedy brings together a solid full length album.
