Pavlova’s Dog is the sophomore release from garage rockers The Meringues. The Kingston quartet is led by the tag team of vocalist Amanda Pants and vocalist/guitarist Ted Evans, who gleefully trade barbs over a backdrop of squealing guitars and bursts of noise. There’s plenty of punch on display via bassist Jackson Baird’s thunderous tone and Alastair Morrison’s muscular drumming.
Opener “Shambles” kicks off the record with a big intro hook and an even bigger chorus. Standouts “Nvr Rlly Hnst” and “Speed” have swagger to spare. “Outta Time” mixes things up with a big-time bluesy stomp and closer “70 Lemon Trees” cuts a breakneck pace. It’s all good stuff, though the secret sauce is when Pants and Evans are doing their rapid-fire back ‘n forth.
High energy from front to back, this is a party record through and through. The Meringues really have captured lightning in a bottle. If you’re looking for a fun time, look no further.
Pavlova’s Dog is available digitally and on vinyl.
