“1-2-3-4” shouts vocalist Doug McBain as he counts in opening track “Tapping Out” a familiar bit of no-frills-punk-rock. The cover to The McBains’ self-titled debut features the band standing in a row, clad in sunglasses and leather jackets. The homage is obvious. This band likes the Ramones.
It should surprise no one that this release has found its home at Faster and Louder Records – an earnest working-class label and purveyor of Ramonescore to enthusiasts worldwide. There is no shortage of Ramonescore bands, but there is also no shortage of Ramones fans screaming “take my money”. It’s a good fit.
Since they’re wedged into such a narrow sub-genre, we can only evaluate The McBains on the merits of their songwriting. Fortunately this is where they shine. Memorable choruses on “Brand New Low” and personal fav “The Rock” stick around long after repeated listens. The performance is fun and loose. Dan Price’s production is warm and cozy – giving off the feel of an uncovered gem from yesteryear.
The McBains lean in hard, delivering the “1-2-3-4” count-in on 9 of the 13 tracks. We know what this is. And that’s why we love it.
The McBains is available on vinyl, CD and digitally through Faster and Louder Records.
