Villain – Don’t Be A Hero

It’s hard to believe it took this long for us to get a Villain full-length. The newest project from Caleb Beal (best known as the frontman of Midnight Malice) has endured multiple lineup changes, years of development hell and a global pandemic. I had feared that 2018’s self-titled EP would be the only release we’d get from one of Toronto’s finest heavy metal outfits. Then late last year single “Too Late For Heaven” dropped, renewing hope.

Now with (digital) album in hand, there’s only one question left: was it all worth the wait?

The title track kicks the door down with chugging glory and a soaring chorus. Aforementioned “Too Late For Heaven” – a rogue’s tale of remorse – is another burner. “Venus Mound” manages to be sleazy and nerdy at the same time with loads of sexual/space-themed double entendres. “I need to feel your celestial body”. Meanwhile, “Womaneater” skips the innuendo and is exactly what it sounds like.

Midtempo numbers “Fire In The North” and “The Ride” previously seen on the EP are re-recorded and benefit greatly from the increased fidelity. A faithful cover of Halloween‘s “What A Nice Place” is included as well.

While admittedly top-heavy, Don’t Be A Hero is a sight for sore eyes and belongs in every metalhead’s collection.
