Expansion Pak is the fast drivin’, hard charging debut from London/Kitchener punk trio Sega Saturn The Console. It’s an aggressive mix of SoCal hardcore and surf-punk that stews in its own darkness. “Recipe For Extinction” is all about fatalism, “Waste of Breath” is a road trip through anxiety and self-loathing and “The Pills” rages against chemical dependency.
There’s a brief bit of levity in the second track “Crazy Taxi” – a callback to a Sega arcade game that was also released on the Dreamcast home console (but not the Saturn!) – when the band takes a sharp turn and sideswipes The Offspring.
The seven-track EP flies by in just over ten minutes and invites repeated listens. Definitely check this one out.
Expansion Pak is available digitally and on CD through Pink Lemonade Records and on cassette through AP Records
