Azure Rose is the new project from Toronto guitarist Justin Grant (last seen with shoegaze superheroes Fjord Rowboat). Debut LP Blue Drops sees Grant stepping up front while teaming up with drummer Derek Downham as well as Fjord bandmates Kevin and Ian McKay and Fjord producer Andy Magoffin. This record is clearly influenced by the Oxford scene of the 90’s (especially Ride‘s Going Blank Again).

Grant deviates from past work and takes a melody-first approach to his songwriting. The album still builds upon crystalline guitars and liberal use of reverb/distortion, but throughout the record Grant’s vocals are front-and-centre. Album opener “Carry On My Mind” is pretty swell, with pedal steel providing all the feels. “Another Holiday” (sung by Kevin McKay) is the album’s big rocker. Pulsating “December” utilizes drones of reverb while anthemic “Good Day Autumn” rests upon a lush wall of noise. Acoustic guitars anchor lullaby closer “Day/Night”.

Combining strong songwriting with gorgeous arrangements Azure Rose has crafted something truly special. Shoegaze and dream-pop fans: feel free to fall in love all over again.

Blue Drops is available digitally and on vinyl.
