There’s something inherently charming about Don’t Tell Sarah’s debut full-length: the cheekily titled Garagemahal. The four-piece, based out of Cornwall, have managed to cram every single heavy metal trope into one record. And this isn’t me ripping on them. On the contrary, they do it so earnestly and proficiently one can’t help but love it.
Opener “Party Animal” opens up with a bluesy bassline before exploding into boogie-action. Standout “Black Sheep” is packed to the brim with hooks and a soaring chorus. The action picks up with thrashy “Hindsight” and “Never Return”. Vocalist Alex Hunter isn’t shy about making use of his over-the-top falsetto and death growl.
Lyrically Don’t Tell Sarah doesn’t stray too far from metal cliches, taking aim at lifestyles of conformity and excess. While they lose points for committing the cardinal sin of rhyming “fire” with “desire”, they make up for it by pairing “greasy” with “easy.”
A couple bonus tracks are included – “Dopamine” and the splendidly silly “Welfare Boogie”.
Expertly crafted and straight-up fun, Garagemahal is a party-in-a-box.
Garagemahal is available digitally and on CD.
