Plato wrote “necessity is the mother of invention” (or some version of that) But is it the mother of reinvention? After two members of former five-piece Among Legends split, they re-tooled as a trio with vocalist Mitchell Buchanan adding bass to his growing list of duties. Leaning into this leaner, meaner version of the group, they recorded LP Lose My Grip.

Right out the gate it’s apparent that Among Legends 2.0 is a fast and vicious beast. Monster drummer Sara Fellin is in fine form on the three burners in a row that kick off the record – very-violent “H/A/C/K”, Bad Religion-esque rallying cry “Sound The Alarm” and missed-connection “Go On”. Buchanan minces zero words on pissed-off call-to-action “Open Wide”.

At his core, however, Buchanan is a melodic songwriter and there are plenty of mid-tempo gems to be found. Bolstered by backing vocals from Fellin and a soaring guitar solo by Tyler Boles, “Familiar Fictions” packs a dreamy vibe that acts as a brief reprieve before radio-ready speedster “Floating Here For Years” kicks things back into high gear.

Lose My Grip is a huge leap forward by a band that was already great. It’s essential listening for anyone who enjoys melodic punk and should be a part of any best-of-2026 conversations.
